Location: Bridge Cottage Heritage Centre High Street Uckfield East Sussex TN22 1AZ

Date: Thursday, February 6, 2020, 7.00 pm - 8.00 pm

This talk, by Ray Sparks, covers the first sighting of Punch and Judy by Samuel Pepys in Covent Garden in 1662 to its continued popularity today on the beaches and various fairs and fetes held throughout the UK.

He tells how the puppets survived the Great Fire of London in 1666, and shares anecdotes of his work with the show over the past 30 or more years.

The basis of each character is explained to the audience, giving information on such people as Jack Ketch, the executioner in London during the 1600,s and Joseph Grimaldi the famous “Father of all Clowns” who performed at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Ray Sparks includes a display of his puppets booth and memorabilia.
