Saturday Social launches in Uckfield for people with dementia
Location: Sussex Support Service, Victoria Pavilion, Victoria Pleasure Ground, Uckfield, East Sussex, TN22 5DJ
Date: Saturday, May 12, 2018, 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm
A social gathering is being launched in Uckfield for people with dementia, their carers and family members, on Saturday, May 12.
Saturday Social will run from 2-4pm and it will give people the opportunity to enjoy companionship while engaging in a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, workshops, music and singing.
The social is being organised by Alison Scutt, owner of Home Instead Senior Care Lewes and Uckfield, and Margaret Dode-Angel, owner of Sussex Support Service.
It will also see the start of #SongsToRemember a campaign being run by Home Instead, an organisation which provides support for clients in their own homes.
Dementia Action Week
The campaign is being launched as part for Dementia Action Week (May 21 to 27) with the aim of getting as many people as possible singing for dementia. Research has shown that memories of old songs activate specific areas of the brain which seem to be resistant to the damaging effects of dementia.
Alison said: “Margaret and I are very excited about the launch of Saturday Social and #SongsToRemember. The cafe will provide an opportunity for anyone, their carers, friends, and family members, and others just looking for company, to come to meet, to reminisce, to share experiences or just get out of the house.”
She added: “Social interaction helps keep your brain functioning. We want to offer a place for people to come and have a chat over a cup of tea, and some cake, while enjoying some great entertainment and activities.”
Free to attend
The cafe is free to attend and ongoing funding is provided from the Building Stronger Communities Grant Fund.
